System Platform Handles the Largest Geo-SCADA Applications in
the World |
|

The London Underground, The Philadelphia Subway System,
Carson City Public Works, Puerto Rico Water and Sewage Authority,
and now the entire rail system for China.
System Platform is the perfect choice for Water & Wastewater,
transportation, oil and gas, energy and more.
Wonderware recently announced that China’s Ministry of Railways has
selected Wonderware System Platform as the SCADA system to
operate the country’s national railway. The project will extend
to 2020 and involves the automation of all power monitoring points for a
majority of the Chinese railroad system and will feature 3
million I/O points.
The Wonderware SCADA project integrates a large part of the country’s
railway lines running from Beijing in the north to Guangzhou in the
south. The project’s estimated budget is approximately 3.5 trillion yuan
(USD $512 billion). The China Ministry of Railways company expects a
6-year return on investment.
“When the China Railway system is completed it will carry both
passengers and goods, reaching a distance of 4,000 kilometers in just a
few hours,” said Chen Qizhi, vice general manager of Chengdu Jiaoda
Guangmang Industry, the Wonderware system integrator managing the
project. “This is a big leap from the normal multi-day trip it takes
right now and is indeed a huge
improvement in our country’s transportation system.”
The initial rollout of Wonderware System Platform software involves
approximately 100,000 I/O points. By the end of 2009, the SCADA solution
will expand to 300,000 I/O points as more stations are added, and will
increase to 1.5 million I/O points by 2010. It is expected that by the
time the project is completed in 2020, the Wonderware SCADA
solution will manage more than 3 million I/O points and will include the
Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railroad currently under construction.
“Wonderware System Platform was chosen by the China Ministry of Railways
because it is able to accept large I/O systems into a single, integrated
solution,” said Mark Davidson, vice president of Wonderware global
marketing. “The scalability of the software makes it possible to execute
the project in stages, enabling China Railways to operate only the
system that is required at a certain time. This allows railway managers
to budget resources properly.”
The China Ministry of Railways’ Wonderware SCADA system will be the
largest-scale industrial project to date involving the Microsoft SQL
Server platform. Wonderware has standardized its automation and control
systems on Microsoft’s industry-standard platforms, such as Microsoft
SQL Server, because they provide the highest levels of security,
reliability and scalability for business-critical applications, as well
as the ability to create and deploy data-driven solutions quickly.
“The China Ministry of Railways selected the Wonderware System Platform
on Microsoft SQL Server to meet its unprecedented scalability challenge
without sacrificing reliability and security,” said Chris Colyer,
global director of manufacturing operations strategies, Microsoft
Corporation. “Microsoft and Wonderware offer a solid
and secure SCADA system built on an open, highly scalable and fully
integrated architecture. Together, we remain dedicated to providing
robust, easy-to-use automation software based on Microsoft technology.”

The China Ministry of Railways is responsible for passenger services,
regulation of the rail industry and development of the rail network and
rail infrastructure. The ministry also is in charge of the operations of
China Railways, which manages the railway bureaus and companies in the
provinces.

Proprietary Panel Killers |
|

What kind of hardware do I need to run my InTouch license?
How about the kind that is tested, certified, sold and supported by
Wonderware?
More new Hardware: Wonderware is announcing two
new Thin Client computers. The first is an upgrade to the
existing Thin Client (Widescreen or standard display support
(to 1920x1440)), and the second is a new Multi-Monitor capable
Thin Client device (Widescreen or standard display support (to
1680x1050) for each display connected - up to 5 displays). Both devices
are available as ACP-enabled units, requiring ACP ThinManager (available
from ACP) software.
Wonderware Hardware sales continue astounding growth as more and more
customers understand the value of access to the world's most popular HMI
product on a Wonderware supported hardware platform. No longer do
customers have to deal with proprietary, closed panel products or
multiple development environments, or questions as to how to handle
certain functionality within a stripped down panel offering.
Because of the ease of use, power, and flexibility of these offerings
and because both hardware and software are fully backed by Wonderware
and their award winning support channel, customers continue to realize
that there is no longer a need to deal with limitations when they can
get everything they need at a very competitive price. Additionally, with
the best OEM program around, OEMs around the world can gain access to
the breadth of Wonderware offerings and need only learn one development
environment to handle any project.
High Level Benefits of Wonderware Hardware:
- Wonderware Panel Computers are developed using the only development System
Wonderware provides - The Wonderware Development Studio. This development system
is the only development system needed for any Wonderware product.
- Wonderware Panel Computers communicate to all major PLC brands with native
Wonderware drivers and can also leverage any Wonderware Certified 3rd party
driver on the market. All Wonderware drivers are included so again, one system
to work with any hardware.
- Wonderware Panel Computers don't have limited capability because they are
running the full version of InTouch - the World's leading HMI. So never worry
about what flavor of panel offering to use to accomplish the job.
- If you do need a low end, pushbutton replacement offering, Wonderware makes
a CE product running a stripped down version of InTouch - but again, screens on
these systems are still developed using the same Wonderware Development Studio.
Wonderware's Hardware Offerings:
Compact

Wonderware Mobile Solutions - The Game Changing Technology |
|

40% to 60% of equipment in your plant is not automated.
Operations is making rounds to collect information via pencil and paper
for critical plant performance metrics. Thousands of points of
data must be manually inspected every day to determine areas of
potential problem and potential plant downtime. We can fix that.
In most manufacturing environments, instrumentation and monitoring is
widespread. Pages and pages of graphs and reports describe every
operational characteristic and are used by operators and management to
steer the plant to optimal performance. But in the modern plant, the
right time to view this information is not when you are standing in
front of an operator console. It is when you are in the field, in front
of a failing piece of equipment or discussing a problem while on the
move. The major limitation to truly getting a handle on this
information, however, is the fact that a significant portion of
equipment measurements and collection points are not instrumented or
automate d.
From many studies, it is known that 40% to 60% of equipment in
the plants and on the shop floors is not instrumented.
Optimizing this critical aspect of plant performance depends on mobile
field workers. Armed with the right tools, mobile workers can
cost-effectively gather data from non-instrumented assets that can be
readily analyzed and integrated into existing back-end decision support
systems (Like ERP or CMMS). Bidirectional flow of information to and
from mobile workers is a key competitive imperative required to make
fully informed decisions regarding the operation of the Perfect Plant.
The key is “automating” all of these manual collection processes
and providing mobile tools that increase the effectiveness of our field
workers.
Industry leaders have repeatedly proven how mobile technology can enable
the disconnected worker, help monitor non-instrumented pieces of
equipment, and assure that field operations and field personnel execute
against standard operating procedures consistently and repeatedly
according to defined best practices. These leaders see step
change process improvements with rapid hard dollar paybacks,
accountability and total visibility based on intelligent and precise
stewardship and corresponding empowerment of their mobile workforce.
Additionally, the ability to begin systematically collecting
non-automated information generated from day to day operational rounds
can serve to significantly enhance the value of other key systems as the
loop between business-side and plant-side data can be closed. This
closed loop process can drive significant value in overall equipment
performance, product quality and reductions in maintenance costs and
energy costs.
The payoff for improving support for mobile workers comes in a variety
of other ways as well. Mobility turns field staff, previously off
the radar when it comes to process optimization, into a visible part of
the designed processes of the enterprise, operating according to
standard procedures with accountability and auditability.
Productivity can skyrocket, providing capacity for mobile staff to
handle additional responsibilities for environmental, health and safety
regulations. While typical workforce productivity
improvements of 20% or more are common with mobile applications,
documented client case studies show that Wonderware
IntelaTrac has delivered over 300% workforce productivity improvements
over a four-year period. Such returns can be transformational.
Additionally, maintenance costs for assets inspected/maintained
using IntelaTrac typically drop by 25% to 30%, resulting in an overall
reduction of 2% in the total maintenance budget. With
maintenance budgets in the millions, cost savings can be very
substantial
indeed.
Where to apply Wonderware IntelaTrac:
- Operations – Rounds (Operator Driven Reliability)
- Maintenance and I & E – inspections
- HSE – safety and environmental rounds
